5.) Evaluate schema theory.
This question is structurally simple, since you have one topic to write about, but in order to get full points you must look at it from all aspects, such as its strengths and limitations. There are a few documents that I may scan and add to this page, but for now I will enter the simple outline for writing this essay, as well as some notes.
Schema - a mental representation of knowledge (how you organize knowledge)
I. Connect schemas to the third principle of the CLOA --> they are influenced by social and cultural factors
II. Define schema
- Importance of culture in comprehension
- We remember through meaning and that which makes sense
III. Define schema theory and explain
- Humans are active processors of info (1st principle of CLOA)
- Schemas influence information processing during encoding and retrieval
+ Ex. burglar vs. buyer --> Anderson & Pichet study (1978, look this one up yourself)
Strengths
- Schemas can be studied scientifically
- Strong scientific evidence for schemas
- Relation to innate schemas (evolution --> according to Hunt)
Limitations
- Assumptions (distortions)
- Reconstructive nature of memory
- Lacks ecological validity (Piaget --> his study of babies recognizing faces wouldn't happen in real life)
+ Methodological flaws - Piaget overestimated the rate at which children develop
